Dr. Cowan was a local dentist whose family occupied the
home from approximately 1940 until 1980.
Following Dr. Cowan's death in the 1960's, Mrs. Cowan
remained in the house for a short period and spent her later years in Tyler
until her death in 1987. The marriage produced several children, some of whom
continue to live in the Mineola area.
During the Cowan years, this room was occupied by George
and was the scene of many pillow fights. During the latter years of his
practice, Dr. Cowan added a structure on the south side of the house which
served as his office (it was later removed during the 1987 restoration), but he
occupied the second floor of the building at Pacific and Broad for many years.
The dental chair and instrument cabinet in the corner of the room pay respect to
his many years of faithful service to the community. The room is furnished with
oak furniture and the oak fireplace mantle is original to the house. The
salesman's sample on the chamber stand matches the design on the mantle. This
charming piece was located in an antique shop in Forney, Texas, and was a "must"
for the room. A tin-lined ice chest now provides storage for quilts and
additional linens.
The bathroom was originally a part of the side attic
until the restoration when the unique corner lavatory was moved from the
downstairs bathroom. The tub, while not original to the house, is of the same
era and is five feet long (each foot is numbered to assist in its proper
placement).
This room contains many happy memories and we know you
will enjoy its charm and warmth.
